  • 80 years - medical and eye test.
  • 85years or over - medical, eye test and Seniors Driving Assessment.

If you are between the ages of 75 to 84 you will receive a letter from the Department for Planning and Infrastructure - Licensing Services 10 weeks before your licence expires.

  • Take this letter to your doctor and get an eye test and a medical as soon as possible.
  • Upon completion of your medical and eye tests, send the results to the Licensing Services.
  • Licensing Services will update their system and review your licence.

If you are 85 years or older you will receive a letter from Licensing Services 10 weeks before your licence expires.

  • Take this letter to your doctor and get a medical and an eye test.
  • Then send the medical form to Licensing Services and they'll notify you so that you can book your Seniors Driving Assessment.

During the Assessment

  • You will drive your own car during your assessment.
  • The assessor may check your car and refuse to take you if your car is not roadworthy.
  • The assessment will take 20-40 minutes.
  • You are assessed on your ability to drive, react to traffic situations and obey the road rules.
  • The assessor will let you concentrate on driving and only talk to give directions.
  • Do not anticipate directions and if you are not sure ask them to be repeated.
  • If you make a mistake, don't panic. Just correct it and carry on.
  • You should have a practice drive to become familiar with the licensing area before assessment day.
  • Try to arrive at the licensing centre 10-15 minutes before your appointment.

After the Assessment

  • You will be advised whether you have passed or failed and the assessor may provide feedback on your driving.
  • When you have passed, pay for your licence while at the centre.
  • If you are unsure what to do, ask the assessor.

Failing the Assessment

If you fail your assessment, in most cases you will be able to book another assessment at a later date.
  • If your licence expires before your second assessment, you will need to get a 'Learner Permit' to drive and must be accompanied by a licensed driver at all times.

Common Problems

The 5 most common problems for all drivers are:
  • Incorrect use and indication at roundabouts.
  • Incorrect speed, especially in residential and school zones.
  • Cutting corners when turning.
  • Not checking your blind spot before merging or changing lanes.
  • Not coming to a complete stop at stop signs.

Help

RAC keys2drive can help you with a Senior Driver Refresher Session prior to your assessment. We'll check your driving skills and discuss changes to the road rules.

Assessment Tips

  • When you receive your letter you should contact your doctor as soon as possible.
  • When advised you must book your practical test straight away.
  • The licensing centre could be busy and you may have to wait several weeks for an appointment.
  • If you wait too long your licence may expire and you cannot drive with an expired licence.
  • Make sure your vehicle is roadworthy.
  • Relax and concentrate on your driving, listen to the assessor.
  • You can sit your assessment more than once.
