Government should fix the current public transport system first

The State Government should concentrate on fixing current problems with Perth’s public transport system before it looks too far into the future, according to the RAC.

While the government’s weekend announcement of a 20-year vision to expand rail and bus networks is welcomed, RAC Executive Manager Member Advocacy David Moir said there were more pressing concerns that needed immediate attention.

“The RAC recently conducted a survey on Perth’s public transport system and the results showed that the public was concerned about overcrowding, the infrequency of services, poor connections, a lack of parking and personal safety,” he said.

“The government needs to address these immediate concerns as well as expanding the system, especially given that the rising cost of fuel is making motorists look at alternatives to the car.”

Mr Moir said many people who would like to use public transport instead opt for their car because of existing problems with the system.

The RAC is pressing the government to ensure new rail cars augment those already in use, examine bus routes to ensure peak efficiency and conduct a safety and security audit on the train network.

“The lack of parking spaces available is a problem for commuters and the TravelSmart program to promote alternative transport needs to be expanded,” Mr Moir said.

“We are seeking assurances from the Premier and the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure that the government will improve the current system as well as putting together a blueprint for the future.”
