RAC backs WA FuelWatch scheme

28 May 2008

The RAC has thrown its support behind WA’s FuelWatch scheme, saying it benefits consumers and helps to keep fuel prices competitive.

RAC Executive Manager Member Advocacy David Moir said although FuelWatch did not necessarily reduce prices, it did not cause them to increase either.

“The WA FuelWatch scheme benefits consumers because it gives them the opportunity to compare prices, find where the cheapest fuel is and it gives them certainty they can buy it at that price,” he said.

“FuelWatch has been in place in Western Australia for seven years and the RAC’s support is based on analysing its impact in that time.”

Mr Moir said there was no evidence that FuelWatch had an adverse impact on independent service station operators and it worked to keep prices competitive.

“FuelWatch works well for consumers in this state and, contrary to some of its opponents’ claims, it has not raised the price of fuel in Perth,” Mr Moir said.

“Today’s report in The West Australian is misleading because the RAC completely supports WA’s FuelWatch and the benefits it passes on to consumers.”

The RAC has accused the federal Labor and Liberal governments of using FuelWatch as a political football and misrepresenting how the scheme works.

Mr Moir said the RAC had no vested interest in FuelWatch and was simply trying to protect the consumer.
