Safer cars save lives

Most people believe all new model cars are equally safe. However, some cars can protect you better than others in a crash. By choosing carefully, you can reduce the risk of you and your passengers being killed or seriously injured in a crash.

ANCAP** (Australian New Car Safety Assessment Program) carries out crash tests on new cars to determine a Star Safety Rating. Each car tested is given a Star Safety Rating from 0 to 5, and the more stars a car receives, the safer it is. A 4 star rating is the minimum level of protection recommended.

Use the ANCAP Safety Ratings Search to rate your car, or to check safety ratings before you buy.

If you're buying a used car, the Used Car Safety Ratings can help you find the safest vehicle based on data collected from Australia and New Zealand.

* While a higher Star Rating is likely to indicate a safer vehicle, there is no guarantee that a vehicle with a higher Star Rating will prevent death or serious injury.
** RAC does not perform or maintain the crash testing. This is carried out independently by ANCAP.
