ANCAP - what are the stars

ANCAP (Australian New Car Safety Assessment Program) conducts crash tests on new cars under controlled conditions. The tests determine how well a car protects its occupants in frontal and side impact crashes.

The cars are then given a Star Safety Rating from 0 to 5 based on the test results. The higher the number of stars a car scores, the better it performed in the crash tests and the safer it is. Cars with a rating of 4 stars or more are recommended.

Nine out of ten top selling cars in Australia have a Star Safety Rating of four stars or more, and many reasonably priced cars score well in the safety ratings. That means you don't necessary have to buy an expensive model car to help protect you and your passengers.
